Mr. John Francis Gilligan, 91, of Greensboro left this world to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, September 6, 2017. We fully believe he is now singing "Danny Boy" in heaven. John was born on June 9, 1926 in New York City, NY, the son of John Edward Gilligan and Ellen Scales Gilligan.

Mr. John Francis Gilligan, 91, of Greensboro left this world to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, September 6, 2017. We fully believe he is now singing "Danny Boy" in heaven. John was born on June 9, 1926 in New York City, NY, the son of John Edward Gilligan and Ellen Scales Gilligan.

John was a veteran of the US Navy serving during WWII. He was a proud member of the VFW. John was also a 40 year member of Saint Paul the Apostle Catholic Church. He was active as a Eucharist Minister, Lector, and on the board of directors. John was a 4th degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus Piedmont Council 939. John will be fondly remembered for his sense of humor and his generous, giving nature. He was passionate about singing and photography but most of all, John enjoyed spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his first wife, Isabella Irene Ricketts Gilligan on March 29, 1964.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marion S. Gilligan; children, Maureen Knauer, Kathleen Zutterman (Rich), Eileen Shelton, Christine Roosma (Woody), John F Gilligan Jr. (Sandra), James Gilligan, Sabrina Field Ladd (Richard), and Kevin Gilligan; grandchildren, Marie Gundlah (Phil), Rich Zutterman (Ellen), Chris Zutterman (Michelle), Jessica Russell (Rob), Kristen Larsen (David), Howard Shelton (Rochelle), Jimmy Shelton, Gary John Roosma, Rachel Hutton (David), Sean Gilligan (Katie), Devin Gilligan (Meaghan), Zack Field, and Chase Field; great grandchildren, Andrew, Pat and Olivia Gundlah, Carter & Gracie Zutterman, Emma and William Zutterman, Colin, Isabel and Tate Russell, Howard Jr., Chanceya and Micah Shelton, Jimmy, Jameisha, Jashayla, Jade, and Tiana Shelton, Cailyn Gilligan, Elijah and Elissa Roosma, and Patrick Gilligan; great great grandchild, Marvin Shelton; sister in law, Eileen Turner (Murray); niece and nephews, Jo Klingler (Rob), Aaron Stembler (Christina) and Susan Titus; great niece and nephews, Tara Catanzariti, Glenn Catanzariti, Bobby Titus, Barbara Jean Titus, Katie Smith, Sierra Klingler, and Hunter and Hayden Stembler.

A funeral mass will be held at Saint Paul the Apostle Catholic Church by Father Joe Mack on Friday Sept 15, 2017 at 11am, 2715 Horse Pen Creek Rpad, Greensboro, NC 27410. Inurnment will follow in the church columbarium with Full Military Honors. A luncheon following the service will be held at the Knights Club, 2780 Horse Pen Creek Road, Greensboro, NC.
